The Mission, the Movement, the Money
Author: Lead Pastor Jamie Munson
Dear Mars Hill Church,
In October, we celebrated our 11th birthday in historic fashion. In Jesus’ grace and sovereignty, every new service and campus got off to a good viable start and we now have room to grow at every service at every campus. Between our five campuses, soon to be six, we have room for upwards of 5,000 new people to hear about Jesus. This momentous news means we are on mission with seeing lives transformed by Jesus!
Psalm 115:1 says, “Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!” Continuing on the mission at Mars Hill Church is all about Jesus and His glory. It also means thousands of additional opportunities for people to hear about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ through our expanded campuses and services. For all this, we are grateful to God for what He has done to and through Mars Hill in the first 11 years, and feel honored to be part of His work in Seattle, and beyond.
Growing the Mars Hill movement has been a tangible working of the Holy Spirit in one of the least churched cities in the country, and continues to grow beyond those borders. It means those of us who call Jesus “Lord” understand that God owns everything we have. He makes everything we make. He is in control of everything and nothing is out of His hands. James 1:16-18 speaks directly to this: “Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.” Being faithful stewards of everything that God gives us includes more than financial resources, it also includes our natural talents and spiritual gifts.
Your Elders deeply thank those of you who are part of our mission to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. Your good stewardship of your God-given time, talent and money enabled Mars Hill to expand its influence for the Gospel. We are grateful that we have so many mature Christians who take that stewardship seriously.
However, we do not wish to become a church supported by the sacrifice and stewardship of a few while many sit on the sidelines and passively receive the benefits of ministry. It is imperative for everyone who calls Mars Hill Church their home to be actively participating in church by serving and giving. While we are adding additional seats through additional campuses and services, we hope, with God’s grace, to create more opportunities for people to hear about Jesus by opening future campuses and mobilizing leaders and members of the church to continue actively participating in the life transformation of others. Both of these ventures will require an investment of time and money from everyone who call Mars Hill their church, not just a faithful core group. For those committed to Jesus, Scripture calls for us to give cheerfully and sacrificially. While the actual amount given will vary per household, it is important for each one of us to determine through the guiding of the Holy Spirit what we will sacrifice.
We are currently about $350,000 behind in the giving necessary to run current church operations for this fiscal year-to-date. The staff has worked hard in response to the giving shortfall to keep their expenses lean. Additionally, we had an operational cash reserve of approximately $750,000 that has enabled continued operations.
For a church of our size, we have a relatively small staff and budget, yet Jesus seems to be able to accomplish a significant amount of ministry through Mars Hill. Those who came before have paid for the seat we are sitting in and so it is our privilege to offer our “first fruits” for those coming after us. In addition to new campuses, we continue to offer our “first fruits” by tithing 10% of our general fund income to church planting and providing resources through our Global Church Department.
As you strive to be good stewards with all God has given you, your Elders and Deacons do the same. We consider it imperative that every decision made be faithful to Jesus and to the integrity of the Body. It is an honor and a responsibility to ensure that the money spent will most effectively use limited resources and further the mission of Mars Hill Church. As part of this responsibility, we also go through an annual audit by an external CPA firm to review our finances and procedures.
Again, we are grateful for those of you who soberly consider your stewardship of God’s gifts and faithfully follow God’s leading in serving and giving. Nevertheless, we also wish to spur everyone to that level of stewardship of time, treasure and talent. As we approach the end of the calendar year and the period of making year-end gifts, we encourage you to recommit yourself to investing in the work of the gospel so that we may see countless lives transformed for Jesus.
If you are not serving, we encourage you to e-mail the campus you attend or stop by a serve desk to find out more about service opportunities.
If you struggle with giving faithfully, we encourage you to listen to some of Pastor Mark’s past sermons on giving which are accessible through our main website. You can also contact our financial ministry to investigate obtaining budget coaching.
If you struggle with serving or giving, we also encourage you to meditate on Malachi 3:8–18 and 2 Corinthians 8 and 9, and ask the LORD what He would have you do.
May Jesus continue to grow and mature us individually and as a Church as we live for Jesus as a city within the city; knowing culture, loving people, and seeing lives transformed to live for Jesus.
For Jesus’ Fame,
Pastor Jamie Munson
